Do I need a special base for a 50 watt mercury vapor bulb?

I have a hexagon shaped fish tank 55gal and it is to deep for florescent lighting. These mercury vapor bulbs dont require a ballist or something do they. Can I screw one into a regular ceramic light fixture. Also Im going to build a top for the aquarium myself Will this light create a lot of heat do I need to add venting slits and a computer fan to keep the air moving. If you know a lot about these bulbs tell me everything.
THANKS

1. A mercury vapor lamp requires a ballast.
putting it into a socket at line voltage won’t work.

2. Any light, mercury or fluorescent will put out
some waste heat which must be vented.

3. Mercury vapor puts out a bit less light per watt
than fluorescent lighting.
If you can’t get enough light out of a pair of , or
even 3 concentric ‘circline` fluorescents, you won’t
be happy with the output of a 50W. M.V. lamp either.

Which light should I use for my bearded dragon?

I heard either the Repti Sun 10.0 fluorescent light tube light or the Zoomed Powersun 100W or 160W are good lights to use for a larger enclosure. I went from a 10 gallon to a 50 gallon. I would like to pick up a better UVA/UVB light since I currently use the 26W Repti Glo 10.0 and I hear they cause eye problems to the beardies.

So, if I go w/ the Repti Sun 10.0, I would need to buy a light fixture for it since it’d be a tube light. Any recommendations out there for a fixture? However, if I decide to buy the ZooMed Powersun, I could probably just use my current ceramic fixture. What do guys think?

the powersun has been causing problems lately with the current model http://www.petmountain.com/ this website has the t rex mercury vapor bulb. that is the best
