Learn the history of pillows

Pillows are known as large cushions used for head support while sleeping or resting in bed. Also, we use them to provide comfort on couches and chairs. Luckily they have evolved greatly since they first came into conception thousands of years ago. It is quite interesting to know how pillows started and where they originated.

Research shows that pillows were found first in Ancient Egyptian tombs and were used to support the head of Pharaohs. Many experts also believe that certain wealthy men in Asian provinces used pillows as well; though differences existed on how these first hard pillow blocks were made. The ancient Greeks and Romans started making softer pillows. In Europe only labouring women used pillows while giving birth as part of the delivery process.

Pillows have transformed to a very soft cushion nowadays. Before, pillows were made of natural stone or were simply just hard box shaped objects made of Leather, Metal, Wood, and Ceramic materials. These materials were carved in different shapes and were engraved with several designs depending on the culture of the people using them.Every pillow was made individually by hand.

Though the materials used in the making of pillows have varied since they first were made; their purpose however remained the same; to hold and support someone’s head or neck. Each pillow was perfectly crafted and was puffed up with materials like feathers, leaves and soft linen cloth in a labour intensive process. This was before companies started mass manufacturing pillows mainly from cotton during and after the industrial revolution.

What’s great about technology and science is that it has helped us determine how to create meaningful, healthy, ergonomic, and simply the best pillows one can buy on the market today. Technology has also made pillows available to everyone, rather than to only a small group of privileged individuals.

Since then, pillows were promoted not just for head support but also for decoration (called throw pillows.)

Pillows, especially evolved therapeutic types, are highly recommended by doctors and chiropractors to improve posture, and to avoid and lessen tensions caused by stress, work and travel related discomfort. Many ergonomic pillow designs are intended for this higher purpose.

Choose your pillow wisely. There are many options available and keep in mind, that you are lucky to be living in today’s time, where pillows are readily available. A pillow should fit your needs. Please give careful consideration to the pillow’s Fill Type, Support, Cover and Size.

Just some interesting facts for you, here are some pillow names which originated from different parts of the world:

1.)    Dakimakura is a pillow name from Japan

2.)    Guling is a pillow name from Indonesia

3.)    Abrazador is a name for a long pillow from the Philippines
