mortar or mastic for tiling tub surround?

I will install 8 "x10" ceramic tile on cement board. All suggestions on the appropriateness of the use-set mortar or mastic? Are there advantages to using one over the other? I have not hooked cement board yet.I think Durock instructions say to keep the right edge of the putty to the rough side for mortar. However, I also read that some people may have a thin layer of mortar prior to installation, which refuses to let the rough side of mortar? Thank you for any advice.

Absolutely not use putty or "PREMIX" glue [really nothing more than pulp] in the tub surround. What nobody tells you otherwise does not know what they speak. Putty is 6.12 months 'dry', then a year, things will be pretty solid.
