The fireplace have come a long way. It evolved from stone to brick to metal. Along with designs are the types of fireplaces and the fuel that they use. From a simple heat source cum stove, it evolved into a décor that matches the furniture in the room.

Wood is commonly used as fuel for the traditional wood fireplace. It comes as manufactured or  seasoned wood. Because of the smoke it emits, a venting system has to be present to prevent being suffocated. During the old days, the ventilation system used is the chimney. More modern wood burning fireplaces uses a flue. These ventilation systems are able to keep the smoke out of the room but they also let the heat escape, making the fireplace less effective in delivering heat to the room.

A more modern version of the traditional wood fireplace is the prefabricated type that is made of metal with a bricklined firebox. This is much lighter compared to the brick or stone type and are highly insulated that you can install them within one inch from the wood framing or other combustible materials.

Woodstoves are also made of metal. They are usually installed in a corner or the center of the room. There is an inlet for entry of combustion air and an outlet for the smoke. You will still need to open the windows, though since the ventilation system is not very effective for this type of heat generator.

Woosdtoves and wood burning fireplaces can be converted into a gel fireplace or an electrical fireplace. The flue or chimney has to be covered and an insert, which may be s gel or electric fireplace type is installed. Other types of insert that can be used are gas inserts and pellet stoves. Pellet stoves uses wood pellets or compressed wood as fuel. They look like pet food pellets and has more burning efficiency than ordinary wood.

Gas fireplaces uses liquid petroleum or natural gas and also needs a ventilation system, although there are also ventless gas fireplaces as well. These have to be installed in an area where the gas line runs through. Gas logs may look like real logs or steel tubes made of heat resistant ceramic or cement.

The gel fireplace is smokeless and odorless and uses alcohol gel as fuel. A can of fuel can run at an average of two to two and a half hours depending on the size of the can. This type of fuel is energy efficient although you need another source of heat during very cold weather.

Electric fireplace uses electricity as its power source and doesn’t have an actual fire so there is absolutely no need for any ventilation at all. However there has to be an electric outlet nearby. Electric fireplaces mimics real flame by using light and sound effects so it feels like a real fire to maintain its cozy atmosphere as well as provide you with efficient heating.
