cleaning marble?
How can I remove a brown ring left by a ceramic pot in a green marble fireplace? Thank you.
"Green" marble is the crucial point. Easily stained and impossible to correct. Sorry. If it is a piece of marble but it may be possible to replace a hard decision where I am.
For Potters: How do I improve the looks of an overfired ceramic pot ? Can I re-fire it with another glaze?
I recently co-fired my pots in my mentor’s kiln. We reached cone 9 in 14 hours ( is this too fast?) . All our pieces had one color- different shades of brown. I want to know if I can improve this by re-firing and adding a new glaze. With so many burnt pieces, it’s disappointing. Please help.
When I fire to cone 10 it takes 2 days to preheat and 2 days to fire and 1 day cool down. The reason why your pots turn brown could be that it heated up to quick but it could also be that there was a outside contaminate. If there was a door that leads to the outside was open for just a matter of moments it could let it Sulfur, carbon, ozone, or just plain oxygen. If oxygen was let in it could produce brown colour pots. This is what is know as Oxidation. If you turn your pot over and its not the normal light tan and its more of a dark brown to a red, then it was oxidized. I have had pots that were glazed Bright blue turn brownish red.
Unfortunately there is no way to re glaze your pots. The glaze will not stick to itself it will burn off kind of like candle wax when its lit.
Next time you fire your pots make sure you don’t let in outside contaminates in and it would happen again.
