What is the safest type of heating? Oil? Ceramic?

Every fall / winter, watch the new heaters causing fires housing. I have not used in the past, but in our new home will be inevitable to use a basement. IDon't know what kind Safer buying.

Most fires are caused by improper use of heaters or use of persons very old. For example, if you set the heating space between the 1950 low lace curtains, is likely to have a fire quickly. Most modern heaters are very safe if used properly. I think everything will go well with either ceramic or oil. Both have more Serface low temperatures (~ 120), which is below the combustion point for everything you have in your home.

The space heater debate! Please help!?

I am sure that 1500 watts is the most and safest current that you can draw from a 110 volt ac outlet. There are many heaters on the market with different designs including ceramics and most have a fan to circulate the air. Correct me if I’m wrong, but 1500 watts is a rating of how many calories/time that the heater can deliver (watts=work) My girlfriend, who is nieve to thermodynamics/physics, insists that not all 1500 watt heaters are the same and some are much better than others??? I do not beleive this. 1500 watts is 1500 watts, the total heat transfer is the same no matter what design/model you choose! Any thoughts as to who is correct? She refuses to listen to my logic.

A 1500 watt electric heater plugged into a 110 volt circuit will draw about 13.6 amps (household circuits are usually rated at 15 or 20 amps). Not much else can be on the same circuit with the heater to avoid blowing a fuse or circuit breaker. The rating is perhaps a nominal rating (i.e., in name only) but is likely very close to the actual performance. House voltage can vary some which can vary current and watts a little.

You can assume that the heater will produce about 1,500 watts of heat, although there may be lower settings and the unit may also be controlled by a thermostat that turn the element ON or OFF. Fifteen 100 watt light bulbs will produce about the same amount of heat (1.5 KW). Of course the total amount of heat produced will depend upon how long the unit is operating. It cost about 10 cents per hour for each KW-hr of operation (or about 15 cents per hour to run your heater at its HIGH setting).
